[AC21.5] Warning suppression

APPROVE COMMIT 21.5 The following patches suppress warnings, at least on Mac OS X 10.5 with GCC 4.2. They can't hurt on other systems, so I'm going to apply. However, three of them are a bit ugly (*), so please let me know if you don't like them, I will be happy to accept improved names or even revert if people feel really strongly.
