IIRC: partly that, and partly because I found the docs about it deeply
confusing, and I could not find a real valid reason for its existence.
Still IIRC, all it contributed was annoying, subtle breakage here and

Hm, I see there's now regexp-opt.el in both the xemacs-base package and
in core 21.5, ditto easy-mmode.el. Is that a good idea?
