More hackery downstream from the path-searching library is likely to
cause problems. The problem with changes like this is that some
people *need* the behavior that appears causing trouble here.
Aidan, could you forward to me the build-report e-mail this is a
response to? I'll have a look at it.

know is that almost any change (specifically this one) in this area
will break somebody's setup.
Anyway, the bug report actually seems related to the switch to
autoconf 2.6 rather than the search algorithm per se. I have a fix
for it that needs polishing; I'll try to do that tomorrow.

I've lost track over the years of who wants what behavior. What I do
know is that almost any change (specifically this one) in this area
will break somebody's setup.
I’m sorry, but that’s not a reasonable ground for a veto. It’s possible to
say ‘almost any change will break somebody’s setup’ in objection to any
patch that changes functionality. It’s the details of what will break and
the trade-off of that breakage versus the improvement that the patch will
hopefully bring, that make such an objection worth considering or not.
Anyway, the bug report actually seems related to the switch to

I think that Michael might have been thinking of my bug report, which you can
find at: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.xemacs.beta/17652/focus=17652
What I really want is that if I have a working XEmacs already installed under
$PREFIX, then from the top of a freshly checked out tree if I run the
following sequence:
$ ./configure --prefix=$PREFIX
$ make
$ ./src/xemacs -vanilla
Then I should have a fully functional program, that gets packages out of
$PREFIX if it can't find them in the source tree.
I'm not particularly tied to the implementation so if there is a better way of
doing it then it's fine by me. I do, however, want to avoid any additional
manual steps.

Thanks for the pointer. The thread is not immediately relevant to my change,
which doesn’t affect package behaviour.
Michael, do you have a directory /usr/local/share/xemacs-21.5-b27/lisp on
