To be fair, if he'd done the abstraction work, I never would have
allowed GTK into 21.4. I don't know whether he would have done the
work for 21.5; he was pretty keen on getting it into the release. He
also faced pretty tight constraints from Bob Weiner. I don't really
regret risking it for GTK, but that experience is one of the reasons
I'm being so anal-retentive about Xft.

Can you post something, designs or even just half-baked code?
Something absolutely has to be done about design before the Xft code
can go in, because of the problem that Xft has to coexist with core
fonts in widgets where we don't "own" (or don't want to own) the code.
