I'm having trouble figuring out what face is used to render a particular bit
of text. See the attached PNG. I'm particularly interested in the
hard-to-read green text. (This was clipped from an ipython comint buffer.)
Given a random bit of text is there some way to determine the face used to
render it?

have you tried to pass to embedded ipython the switch
"-colors LightBG"?

You can do M-x list-faces-display (or edit-faces), which lists all of
the defined faces.
Or you can use this:

It seems to me that Stephen has just made available a package to ease
that kind of thing (Introspector or something). Have a look at recent
archives of this list.

Ooh, cool. Just what I needed. That gave me the insight to determine that
it's ansi-color doing the actual face manipulation, translating escape
sequences on-the-fly. Looks like Giacomo's suggesting about -colors LightBG
is the way to fix this.

tooltip describing practically anything you could want to know about
buffer point, and is bound to a keystroke (by default C-h =).
Extension to a mouse binding like Jeff's is trivial, just bind
`introspect-cursor-position' instead of d-f-a-m-p in the above.
(Extensions like a hovering tooltip that follows mouse are conceivable
but not high priority unless somebody asks for them with a plausible
use case.) It's packaged as an XEmacs package, just drop it in your
system site-packages or in ~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages or
~/.xemacs/site-packages, and add `(require 'introspector)' to your
init file. (This last requirement will become unnecessary in the
future, but to create a default keybinding is invasive.)
