Dear Bug Team!
I experience problems with the `electric pipe' in my newest
xemacs (obtained with RedHat Linux 8.0) and sml-mode packages
(downloaded from auk.dk).
When I type
fun fact 0 = 1 followed by M-|
I expect to get
fun fact 0 = 1
| fact
(which I usually do in the old xemacs ver 21.1 patch 14 on sparc sun
solaris 2.7)
However, I just get
fun fact 0 = 1
|
i.e., the name of the function is not repeated.
The same happens in xemacs 21.4 patch 9 "informed management"
(obtained with Mandrake Linux 9.0), which is installed on of my other
computers
Therefore, I think the problem is with the sml-mode package.
Let me know if I have to inform the sml-mode developers (which email
address should I use?)

Thanks, Ville, the patch you suggested (which I applied manually -
easier than to find how to do it automatically; have to figure it out
next weekend) apparently solves the problem. But the new one appears
(also existed before the patch was applied):
When you mark the region like
fun f 0 = 1
| f n = n*f(n-1)
and select "Indent region" from the SML->Format menu, it reports
"Symbol's function definition is void: sml-indent-region"
(does not happen and works fine on stable old xemacs ver 21.1
patch 14 on sparc sun solaris 2.7).

Thanks a lot, Ville!
Playing for half an hour with all your previous and the last
sml-patches applied I was unable to discover anything wrong (el-pipe,
format region, send-buffer, -region now work OK). I am switching to
this newer xemacs version for all my everyday purposes, will certainly
try it more agressively, and will let you know if something goes
wrong. (So far all LaTeX-AuC-TeX features my students and I use 10
hours a day work fine.)

sml-patches applied I was unable to discover anything wrong (el-pipe,
format region, send-buffer, -region now work OK). I am switching to
this newer xemacs version for all my everyday purposes, will certainly

wrong. (So far all LaTeX-AuC-TeX features my students and I use 10
hours a day work fine.)

I have already committed the previous patches and will commit the last

Duh, this is due to difference between XEmacs' and GNU Emacs'
`write-region', the 7th arg does completely different things in them.
Sergei, does the patch below fix the problem for you?
Stefan, could you apply or comment this and the other patches I've sent
to the "upstream" sml-mode?
The patches are just fine. About this last one, note that the code is
not used under Emacs-21 (because Emacs-21 provides its own make-temp-file),
so the better patch is to simply remove the 'excl thingy (which is
more or less ignored by Emacs-20).
