Has this issue been solved ? I have upgraded my xemacs to the latest
21.5 cvs sources and xemacs-packages and I seem to get a similar
problem. I can't even byte-compile a .el file, because I get this very
same message about the compile log buffer.

Though Stephen will probably tell you that this is the wrong
solution, as it restores another bug. Nevertheless, since I never
encountered the other bug, but have this one regularly, I use this
patch until Stephen comes up with a better solution. Maybe that
works for you as well.

Could you guys try this patch? This should fix it, conceptually. If
it doesn't, there are some other severe problems with the whole
latin-unity approach, I'm afraid. I don't have a comprehensive test
suite, so I can't be sure it will work for you.

The situation vastly improved, but I still can't get the attachments to work
under Gnus. I even start to wonder if it is related.

"Attachments under Gnus"? Sorry, I don't remember this
(probably my
acute brain cell loss...). Is there a thread you can point me to?
Up to now, I could open a pdf sent as an attached file by cliking on it in
the Gnus Article buffer. Now I get a corrupted file. As I upgraded my whole
XEmacs tree (source and xemacs-packages and latest Gnus at once), I assumed
that there were only one problem, namely the latin-unity one. Apparently, I
may have another one.

"Latest Gnus" == Gnus CVS (not an XEmacs package)?
Have you confirmed that this only happens if latin-unity is installed?
What happens with "xemacs -vanilla -f gnus", and then click on the PDF
attachment?
