In XEmacs 21.4 (patch 3) "Academic Rigor" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Thu May 17

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I'm trying to use gnus 5.8.8 with the option pop3-leave-mail-on-server
to leave mail on the pop server. This requires using the pop3.el from
mail-lib. However, I'm getting errors in writing the .uidls.old file
that pop3.el uses to keep track of which messages have been read.
At the suggestion of Simon Josefsson, I tried this simple experiment,
which *did* give me an error:

Can you reproduce this with:
xemacs -q -no-init-file
C-x C-f ~/foo RET foo C-x C-s
and then switch to *scratch* and evaluate:
(copy-file "~/foo" "~/foo.old" t t)
If so, I'd say this is a XEmacs bug, M-x report-xemacs-bug RET is your
friend.
This gives me:
I/O error: No such file or directory, d:\HOME\foo.old
but it *does* create foo.old! Weird.
Any clues on this? I get similar errors when I try to use Franklin
Lee's epop3mail package, though this works flawlessly with gnu emacs
21.1.

Windows file handling seems to be remarkably hard. Lots of patches
recently.

I strongly suggest you upgrade to 21.4.6 (Windows).
If that doesn't help, try the Cygwin version.

That solved the problem, I was told. Good. But, know that we know
this, and probably can't think of a workaround to put into pop3.el to
make it work with older XEmacsen -- should this information somehow be
encoded into the package? I mean, pop3 from mail-lib will fail with
the same error the next time someone tries to use it with XEmacs <=
21.4.3 on Windows. When a user with an old XEmacs upgrades mail-lib,
there could be some post-install notes in a buffer stating that
pop3.el does not work reliably with the XEmacs that she is currently
using, and that she should upgrade.
I'm not saying we should do anything now, I am just bringing up this
question for long-term pondering, since this problem will have to be
solved sooner or later -- someday a package will come along that
requires XEmacs vX.Y, and that older XEmacsen should preferably not by
default allow the user to install such packages, since they won't
work.

I think what we should do is put version testing code into pop3.el.
It would be a lot of effort to have a central registry for this mind
of thing.

There were a bunch of fixes to file support post patch 3. I suggest you try
the latest version of XEmacs - 21.4.6.
