Any one ever try running xemacs over a slow link? Once in a while, I
connect to my home box over a broadband cable connection. The uplink
speed is about 300 kbps (downlink is 3-5 Mbps).
XEmacs itself is really quite usable over this link, except for one
thing. The toolbar keeps redrawing itself over and over everytime I
change buffers.
Is that supposed to happen? It takes a good 5 sec or more to redraw
the default toolbar.
Of course, I rarely use the toolbar, so I can just turn it off via the
menu (which works just fine at this slow speed).

Yes, even when the toolbar doesn't change because the new buffer is in
the same mode as the old buffer, it redraws itself. This is
especially annoying when using Gnus. I agree that it's annoying, but
I've never gone digging through the code to find out why it happens.

Or set '(toolbar-visible-p nil) in your custom.el and never be bothered with
it in the future...

Yes, I know I can do that, but that just works around the problem. But
maybe the intersection of people who have slow links and who use
toolbars is zero. :-)
This works fine for what I want, though.
Ray, who used to run xemacs 19 on a 9600 baud line (X compression
enabled may have been enabled) way back when and it worked quite well if
the scrollbar and toolbar was turned off. :-)

I for one would like to have a fix, but it's a deep problem.

I have. Basically, Andy added the widgets in a style that seems to
assume that anything can draw anywhere, and there are no widgets that
know how to maintain themselves. (Maybe you need to do this in MS
Windows and Carbon?) So everything in the lwlib and redisplay code
now is infested with a million ad hoc dirty flags, and redisplay tries
to manage widget redraws by hand (unmapping the subwindows instead of
letting X11 optimize calls for obscured parts or setting an
appropriate clip region).
My guess is that some of these then set dirty flags ....
