Building XEmacs from hg sources on a brand-new Ubuntu box, fails with
termcap.c:236:1: error: unknown type name 'speed_t'
Looks like this type is defined in /usr/include/termios.h but that header isn't
getting pulled in. The configure test is finding this header file and reporting:
configure:18681: checking for termios.h
ac_cv_header_termios_h=yes
Full config and make output attached, if anyone wants that level of detail.
The problem is solved by the following trivial patch:

That's odd. On a modern Linux system I would expect the build to
include terminfo.c, not termcap.c. I think you should check to make
sure you have relevant TTY support (including dev packages) such as
n?curses.

Makes sense except that I suspect that systems that need termcap
probably pull in the relevant typedefs in some other way.

Well, I had a fight with that problem a few years ago. Maybe it then
was under cygwin but I think the problem remains the same. Whether or
not we prefer terminfo if it is there I'm not sure but I fear we do.
Maybe it is time now to remove support of termcap? As you say all
modern systems ought to have terminfo or ncurses.
I think you should check to make sure you have relevant TTY support
(including dev packages) such as n?curses.
The workaround I have used when this issue pops up is to install
ncurses. We prefer that to termcap when it is available.

As other folks said, you are missing libncurses5-dev. Actually to save
yourself a bunch of little issues with what Configure finds on your
machine just do "sudo apt-get build-deps xemacs21" to get all the build
requires for the old version and that should get you fairly far towards
building the beta version. (Geez, I can't believe there is a ppa
somewhere for xemacs-beta.)

I don't see a reason to remove it, it probably still works on systems
that need it. The effort to check whether there are any systems that
need it seems unreasonable.
We could have configure warn, though.

I'm pretty sure you must be talking of Cygwin. On Gentoo, Debian, and
Mac OS X, here's the guts of termcap.h:

I doubt Ubuntu is any different.
I tried to install latest Ubuntu in a virtual-box in order to
investigate the problem better. Unfortunately it failed to launch
gnome properly because of problems with 3D-acceleration. Sigh. Maybe I
can still use it to check the xemacs build anyway. Don't need the
graphics to build it. I'll keep you posted.

In case something like this comes up again, I recommend installing
Xubuntu (Xfce) in VMs, rather than Ubuntu (GNOME) or Kubuntu (KDE).
It's relatively lightweight, and it works fine with unaccelerated
graphics.

In this case there seems to be no TTY support compiled in at all. That
part of "Installation" is empty. Does this imply a bad setup, that no

Yes, thanks. I wanted to recreate the environment for the error report
so I just went for the latest Ubuntu install. Are the distros close
enough so that building on Xubuntu will be as good as building on
Ubuntu?
However: I managed to get it working using Virtual-Box on a linux
machine, first try was from windows, so I now have that
environment. Out of the box configure did then not find any window
system nor tty!!! So this could explain some of the problems I guess.
So some development packages are missing.

I believe it's the last. We only build without TTY support if you
supply the --without-tty option. I find it hard to imagine a system
that has *zero* TTY support. That's why I suggest a warning.

For building XEmacs, yes, Xubuntu should be close enough. The only
possible difference I can think of would be related to the GTK
libraries.
So some development packages are missing.
Yes, I had to add these packages after a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10:
libncurses5-dev
libx11-dev
libxaw7-dev
libpng++-dev
libxft-dev
(libxft-dev is only needed if you're building 21.5 with Xft support, of
course.)

This made the build brake in another way than the termcap problem
which is logical.
However I don't feel like it is important to investigate that path
further. If you don't have a windows environment and still want to
build with no tty I guess it won't work.
