Hi everyone,
I am a big fan of XEmacs, and one of my favourite things about it is
that it sticks with a simple *tif interface rather than a GTK
interface. =
I was wondering, however, if there where any plans to update the
interface, since most people expect a flashy modern interface
thesedays. =
Thanks, Leon

Hello
Perhaps this should have been posted to comp.emacs.xemacs, but this newsgro=
up seems almost down.
My problem arose when my old laptop (windows XP, 1920x1200 screen) died, an=
d I bought a new laptop (windows 10, 3840x2160).
I fell in the "high dpi hell", with the toolbar icons nearly invisible on t=
he screen.
The edited text itself was made visible by choosing a good font size, but w=
as blurred by the stretching mechanism of windows 10.
I decided the only way to go was to buy a large monitor (32", 3840x2160), i=
n order to bypass the streching mechanism of windows 100, and display thing=
s at 100%.
Now the toolbar is correct, the text is crisp, but the menubar font is much=
too large, taking much screen estate. Moreover, as I added many items to t=
he menu, it no longer fits in one line, making things unsightly.
I couldn't find in xemacs doc any way to change the menubar font. It seems =
the menubar font (size) is hard coded in C, and no lisp function allows to =
access it.
Browsing the Web, I found solutions for Xemacs under Linux, or possibly Cyg=
win, using the file .Xresources. I found also a solution for GNU emacs unde=
r Windows by setting register values under the keys =
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GNU\Emacs
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GNU\Emacs
Sadly this doesn't work for Xemacs, searching the register via regedit didn=
't give me any key about menubar for Xemacs.
Perhaps I could create those keys and it would work, but I have no idea of =
the exact spelling of those keys for Xemacs !
I considered changing for GNU emacs, or Xemacs under Cygwin, but MY Xemacs =
is highly customized, including modifications in the elisp code for predefi=
ned functions, and it would be a very hard job figuring how I could reimple=
ment all my modifications (more than 20 years of various adjustments) in a =
new software.
The best way for me is to set the menubar font size for Xemacs under native=
windows, as it is the only thing that doesn't work well with my new enviro=
nment. If anybody out there has a solution, or some hints towards the solut=
ion, please help me.
Thanks in advance.
Alain

I only have a hint. The menubar font is is set using an X property
when running X:
XEmacs*menubar.font: 10x20
Not sure how the X properties are handled under windows... it has been
too long.
Cheers,
Sean

Although I'm not particularly active I think I can speak for the XEmacs
Project that there are no plans like that. No plans at all really. I'm sad =
to
say but I'm afraid that there is not much development of XEmacs and that
situation has been so for many years now.

Hello Alain,
The menubar font in XEmacs is the system default menu font; on this XP
machine I can change it by going to Control Panel -> Display -> Appearance
-> Advanced -> selecting =E2=80=9CMenu=E2=80=9D in the =E2=80=9CItem=E2=80=
=9D drop-down, changing its font
and its size, then clicking OK, then Apply. I don=E2=80=99t know what the
corresponding approach is in Windows 10. There is no corresponding registry
entry, to my knowledge.
I would be surprised if other applications had no issues. Can you try
changing the corresponding system font and report back?
Best,
Aidan

This is essentially true. I will do some work on XEmacs for the foreseeable
future, and some of that work will involve improving the GTK support. I have
an exam at the end of the month and then a massive legal personal issue to
sort out, so I won=E2=80=99t be around much, and then after that I will onl=
y be able
to put about a quarter of a full-time-equivalent of work in.

Hello Aidan
Windows 10 is really a mess. Everything you can do in a reasonable simple w=
ay in XP becomes almost impossible in Windows 10 ! All the stuff for adjust=
ing menu fonts, title bar fonts, window borders width, ... is gone in Windo=
ws 10, and you have to cope with the generally aberrant values Microsoft de=
cided for you (in fact Windows 10 was conceived for tablets, and even if yo=
u buy the most expensive laptop or desktop computer, you end up using a tab=
let...).
Fortunately, browsing the web gives some solutions, like register keys to m=
odify, or tweakers (Winaero Tweaker for instance) which allow to regain som=
e control on GUI appearance.
BUT, this is without counting with the deplorable way Windows 10 manages th=
e scaling on high DPI displays : if you leave Windows 10 manage the scaling=
, everything is blurred on the screen, which is really a pity when you opte=
d for a high DPI display !
The only way to go is to tell Windows 10 "Don't do anything" (an option exi=
sts on a per application basis to have no scaling done by the OS, the scali=
ng is done by the application). And here is my problem : Xemacs must do all=
the scaling : no problem for the text font (easy to change), fortunately t=
he toolbar is fairly readable (at least on my 32" monitor), but the menubar=
font sucks : much too large as I explained.
Now other applications have also problems, a web search with "windows 10 sc=
aling issues" gives you countless references to users complaining about thi=
s, and sometimes some solutions. Sadly I didn't find anything for Xemacs na=
tive on Windows ...
To answer precisely your question, I tried to decrease the menu font size (=
using Winaero Tweaker, as Windows 10 has no native way to do that). But as =
the Windows 10 scaling is disabled for Xemacs (only way to have a crisp edi=
ted text), it had no effect, except making Windows menus more difficult to =
read...

Greetings,
opening XEmacs under Cygwin and clicking on "Help" -> "About XEmacs ..."
presents a buffer showing (among other things) the text
[version 21.4.24; April 2015]
and doing the same under Ubuntu returns a similar
[version 21.4.22; April 2015]
However when I check the Mercurial log of the repository found at
https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacs
or look into file "ChangeLog" in aforementioned repository I cannot find
such an XEmacs version. According to this file version 21.5.0 "alfalfa"
was already released 2001-04-18, the version before this was 21.2.46
"Urania", dating back to 2001-03-21, and the version current in April
2015 aparently was 21.5.34 "kale", released at 2013-06-23.
What does version 21.4.* really refer to?
Sincerely,
Rainer

It refers to the =E2=80=99stable=E2=80=99 version, of which the Mercurial r=
epository is
available here: https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacs-21.4/
As you may have worked out, XEmacs is not a very active software project
currently. Those who use it in general use version 21.5, which is designated
the beta version; Windows binaries available here:

Aidan,
thanks for the immediate reply ... :-)

Aha. But I'm still a bit surprised that the changesets of the former stabl=
e version are nowhere
to be found in the repository of the new beta version derived from it. Or =
is 21.5 really derived
from 21.2 and 21.4 is some sort of (stable) dead branch?

Yes, I have noticed it's not very active, but I'm more than glad it's activ=
e at all, after it looked
as good as dead not so long ago ...
And no, I'm not interested in Windows binaries, I prefer to roll my own ...=
:-)
Sincerely,

Or is 21.5 really derived
> from 21.2 and 21.4 is some sort of (stable) dead branch?
Right. The most recent common ancestor is XEmacs 21.2.46 of 2001-03-21.
Shortly after that 21.4 became the stable branch and 21.5 became the
development branch.
