VM problem when composing two messages at once 22 years, 6 months

VM autosave doubles Escape character; mangles Japanese etc 22 years, 6 months

If you recover from an auto-saved session then you are likely to see surplus escape characters everywhere. You don't need a Japanese input method to reproduce this. Try this in VM: 1. Send a mail to yourself with a single escape character (looks like ^[) - press Ctrl-Q then Escape - in the message body. 2. Fetch new mail. 3. Do M-x do-auto-save. 4. Examine the file #INBOX# using "less" or a similar tool. You should find that the escape character has been doubled (now there are two of them). Although it is not doubled when the inbox is saved normally (this is only an auto-save thing). And I've only seen this happen in VM (I've tried auto-saving a text file and cannot reproduce it that way). The bug is more serious than the above description would seem, because it mangles messages in ISO-2022 format (most often used by Japanese). When recovering from an autosaved session, such messages will pick up surplus escape characters all over the place. If this is done several times, and the messages containing escape characters are not examined by the user, then the escape characters could multiply up unnoticed (exponential growth - doubles every time) and significantly increase the size of the inbox, causing thrashing and other problems. This happened to me quite a while ago, and I only now understand why. Chinese email doesn't work in VM 22 years, 6 months

The problem appears to be due to the default values of the variables vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist and vm-mime-mule-charset-to-coding-alist. I have found by experiment that adding the following lines to my .emacs will work around the problem: (remassoc 'chinese-gb2312 vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist) (add-to-list 'vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist '(chinese-gb2312 "gb2312")) (add-to-list 'vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist '(chinese-big5-1 "big5")) (add-to-list 'vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist '(chinese-big5-2 "big5")) (add-to-list 'vm-mime-mule-charset-to-coding-alist '("gb2312" gb2312)) Looking at the value of vm-mime-mule-charset-to-charset-alist, it seems that a couple of other languages (e.g. Thai) won't display properly either, but I haven't tried this. w3 renders tables wrong 22 years, 6 months

Hi, w3 is nice as a checkbox feature (one can say "xemacs integrates ... web browser ...") but IMHO not really usable as a web client. It can render a simple page, but whenever I try to actually browse with it, I quickly come across a page w3 won't handle. As an example, I've recently written some pages with nested tables; attached is the HTML source and screenshots how it looks in netscape vs. in xemacs. Bye Vasek

Most application have no problems with 'combreloc' but it breaks the dumping mechanisms of both XEmacs and Emacs, therefore it has to be switched off again when building XEmacs or Emacs to revert to the previous default from the binutils package. Multi-version installations 22 years, 6 months

I currently have 21.5-b1/i686-pc-cygwin AND 21.4.3/i586-pc-win32. For maximum sharing, particularly of PACKAGES, I configured the windoze version into my Cygwin heierarchy so that I have: Cygwin: [C:/CYGWIN]/usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.5-b1/i686-pc-cygwin/xemacs.exe Windoz: C:/CYGWIN/usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.4.3/i586-pc-win32/xemacs.exe AND [C:/CYGWIN]/usr/local/lib/xemacs-packages/... ENV "EMACSPACKAGEPATH" is set appropriately. When I startup I get a bunch of complaints about various "Autoloads already loaded." If I do describe-variable "late-package-load-path" I find the things I expect from lib/xemacs-packages, but I also find *BOTH* xemacs-21.4.3 and xemacs-21.5-b1 version specific paths at the end of the package-loac-path list. Why? Would somewone please clue me in to how the initialization code deduces the package-load-path; either describe it or point me toward the info pages or even the lisp source. TIA -- David A. control-k is taking a full 2 seconds per invocation. other tasks so far seem normal. Solaris 2.6, xemacs 21.4.5 I've moved my .emacs file out of the way ... no change.
