* XEmacs 21.4.5 "Civil Service" is released.
"Civil Service" is the sixth in the OXYMORON series.
Relative to XEmacs 21.4.4 "Artificial Intelligence", it contains
critical fixes for the "GC in windows procedure" and "setitimer"
crashes on the MS Windows platform. There are also a few typo
fixes in the documentation, and some minor bugfixes in the user
interface.
Due to the forced move from our CVS server and other infrastructure
issues, this release has been prepared in some haste. It does appear
that the stability on Windows platforms is acceptable, or better.
There are very few changes that affect stability of other platforms,
so they are expected to give excellent stability as usual.
A binary release for Windows with improvements in the installation
process should follow shortly.
More detailed information about the changes is presented below.
The first release in this series, Xemacs 21.4.0 "Solid Vapor",
contained a large number of improvements and extensions to the current
stable version, XEmacs 21.1.14. For more information about the

* XEmacs 21.4.5 is "gamma" software.
Besides the usual "no warranty" disclaimer (see etc/WARRANTY, sections
10 and 11), we are now experimenting with a level of stability
intermediate between "beta" and "stable", dubbed "gamma". At this
point all the developers and most of our beta testers trust the 21.4
code base with all their editing needs.
After several months of testing, XEmacs 21.4.5 now is sufficiently
stable to be recommended to all users. However, there still remain a
few outstanding problems with fontlock that must be fixed before we
retire 21.1.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
When using VM with BBDB, BBDB tries to collect the names and
email addresses of incoming messages.
A lot of Japanese messages have "From" lines that look like
this:
From: =?iso-2022-jp?B?GyRCRnxLXD9NGyhC?= <someone(a)somewhere.jp>
When BBDB sees such a message, it files the sender's email
address under the name "iso-2022-jp". As a result, the BBDB
entry for "iso-2022-jp" comes to have a significant number
of email addresses, and only the first few of these can be

"Civil Service (Windows)" is the sixth in the OXYMORON series.
XEmacs 21.4.5 "Civil Service (Windows)" is the first in a series of
MS-Windows focused releases of XEmacs. The intent of this release
series is to provide source and binary distributions of the XEmacs
21.4.x series with any additional fixes or enhancements necessary to
provide a pleasurable editing experience on the MS-Windows platform.
Source will be available via cvs when our cvs server returns. This
release will have the release tag r21-4-5-windows and the most current
snapshot will always have the tag 21-4-windows.
The binaries for both cygwin and native MS-Windows are available via
the XEmacs netinstaller which can be found at
http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/setup.exe This version of the

- Fixed a scrollbar problem when selecting the frame with focus.

Dear Bug Team!
With the latest 21.4 releases if I run xemacs remotely
to my home Linux box from a Solaris box at work through
a SSH gateway, Control-K is VERY slow to respond. So much
so that I have to revert back to 21.1 for usable text editing.

Mr. Piper,
I've run the setup.exe that the link below points to but there
seems to be a problem getting the win32 xemacs package.
In the setup.ini file it says:
install: win32/xemacs-i586-pc-win32-21.4.5.tar.gz 7304232
but after repeated downloads the file size is always 7304081.
I tried changing the size myself in the .ini file and trying
again but it didn't work.
(On a side note, since the .tar.gz file remained in the win32
directory I tried an install from a local directory and the
setup program crashed.)
What I've done is unpacked the .tar.gz file by hand and have
21.4.5 running but I thought I'd mention it so you guys can
make adjustments if necessary.
