Ah, I found man pages for lurker command-line tools under

I was specifically looking for

The documentation isn't very extensive, but good enough to get
started, I guess.
Search by message-id works, once you know to drop the angle brackets
and use the "id:" prefix:
http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/search/20380101.000000.00000000@id:20070406151654.gh22861@philipp-benner.de.en.html
This should allow us to convert links to old mailing list URLs for
which we have message-ids, which is not the case for all, though.
