It is a DNS requirement that an explicit IP address be entered into the
parent name server's domain file if the name server is in the domain
being registered or in a subdomain of that domain.

All registrars do or should require explicit IP addresses for listed
name servers, (a) so that they can comply with the above, and (b) so
that they can check IP addresses against the name servers' reports of
those IP addresses to make sure that they are correct [even though I
suspect most registrars don't particularly care, and don't do this].

Anyway, this is why we were having problems - even though the correct
information was in ALL of our name servers, it continued to be wrong in
the parent name server.  And querying name servers got that information
before asking our name servers.  Fortunately, some name servers (recent
versions of BIND, I think) did not treat the non-authoritative data as
authoritative, and went on to query our name servers.
