Yes.  The problem is in the "progress gauge" widget, not in font-lock.

Customize `progress-feedback-use-echo-area' to `t' and the problem
will go away.

If you can supply a C stacktrace with proper symbol information, that
might help localize the problem.  I've spent many hours looking at the
code for the widget, and haven't figured out what the problem is yet,
so don't hold your breath waiting for a fix.
