gnugo / fsf emacs "display" property workaround?

I found out that I can use a face with a glyph in the display-table.
However, this doesn't respond to mouse clicks anymore when I set it to
an image (xpm) glyph. works fine when I set the dt to a string, though.
Any thoughts?
