I tried reproducing this problem on some other Linux machines including an
openSuSE 11.4 box and a different Ubuntu 10.04 box.  Neither of these have
problems with customize.  It's just this particular machine.

However, I recently updated xemacs to the latest hg version and recompiled.
The problem is now gone.  Customize no longer crashes; it works as
expected.  Don't know what change made the problem go away.

If someone is interested, I supposed I could do a bisection to find out what
change made it all work.
