FWIW, I had tried this on some other systems including an Ubuntu system.  No
crashes there.

On a whim, I did an hg update today and rebuilt.  The repeatable crash on
this ubuntu system is gone now.  Customize appears to be working just fine.


I didn't check to see what change made this go away, but I'm grateful that
it magically disappeared. :-)
