No, no Xft.

This isn't the exact one but the only practical difference should be that the 
one the OP is using was compiled with gcc 4.4.

I'm afraid that'd be more or less "start XEmacs".  Note that I don't have 
access to an environment where this could be reproduced either, but AFAICT 
there has been some changes related to "legacy fonts" handling in bleeding 
edge X.org (some fonts "embedded" in the server or something like that).
