I think that’s an excellent idea--I’ve been mulling various ways to avoid
our Unicode support trashing data in the short term, and that’s better than
anything I’ve come up with :-) .
Stephen’s comment that everything is going to change shortly is true, but
not for values of “shortly” that end before we make any release this year†,
unless he has a lot of relevant tested, debugged code on his hard disk. I
have written a decent amount of a C implementation of
UCS-as-our-internal-encoding, but it is not yet robust, and a lot of Lisp
needs to be changed and tested the way I’m doing it, something that will
take a while.
†Still not guaranteed, much as I’d like to commit to being release engineer
