I can't speak for the other developers, of course. *I* didn't put it in
because it made me shudder. The fact that this bug exists at all is
because the timer queue is kept with respect to relative times, rather
than absolute times. That's a recipe for ever-increasing drift. I
intended to do a thorough cleansing of itimer.el and base it on absolute
times, but then ... uh ... never had the time.
I agree that this band-aid should go in until such time as a rewrite can
be accomplished, though. I'll go over to xemacs-patches and look at it
again.
