Sure, but we have all sorts of variables like this
(e.g. `TeX-command-list' and `TeX-output-view-style') where we don't
ask explicitely for customization. For these variables we strive to
detect proper defaults automatically during configuration.
If we fail to get those defaults, the user usually recognizes that
there is something wrong as soon as the respective functionality is
used. I think it is better to keep it this way, than to bother the
user with customization if she hasn't asked for it.
I don't know how far Lars has come with the customization assistants
for Gnus. But an assistant might be a possibility to do manual
customization upon request.
