OK, well, if you can be that good-humored about it, I can too.
Tell you what---I think that we can probably take Werner's patch, put
the resulting configure.ac and configure in ./tests somewhere, and
make it part of the test suite. I'll do some research and see if
there are any variances between the 2.5x-produced config.h and
Makefiles, and those produced by 2.13. If not (and why should there
be, once we fix config.h.in, and possibly some of the Makefile.in.in
to make autoconf 2.59 happy?), then we can add an automated test to
`make check'. Once we've collected results from people on non-SuSE
platforms, we can think about going to it on an experimental basis in
21.5 (and distribute the old 2.13 script in ./etc as a backup).
