I can confirm that removing the line does not break 21.5 with gcc 2.95.4 (at
least under YellowDog 2.3). I've tested it with and without --pdump, with gcc
and with g++. In all cases xemacs starts and I get useful debugging
information from gdb.
YellowDog 2.3 is a 2-yo distribution so I think it's safe to say that anyone
running PPC Linux would be running either it or something newer. My thought
is that this code was need for the first version of Linux on the PPC, the Mach
based mklinux. That version is long dead.
I'm currenting building gcc 3.3.2 to see if I can reproduce Stefan's original
problem.
