While writing up the bug report for the upstream gnus folks, I thought
of another variable.  I'm reading xemacs-beta via an nnmh foreign
group.  (I primarily use mh-e for mail, but I use gnus in the places
where I want score files.)

I don't know why that would make a difference, but maybe it's why I'm
seeing the null Subjects and you're not.  (I'm assuming you don't use
nnmh foreign groups.)
