Fixes to experimental sjt-xft branch committed

Never heard of it before; I'll take a look.  Use if already available,
yes, though I doubt we'll be willing to require it on systems that
don't have it.

I doubt this works with autoconf 2.13, though, so it may have to wait
for autoconf 2.5x support in our configure script.
