It works fine with GNU Tar. I should have think to it while reading the
output of the 'tar tvf ..'.

PS: from me to you , it was sounding very strange to me that such error
could have actually occurred !!!

In the same way, the same process work fine on the xemacs-mule-sumo.tar.gz.

Are you using native Solaris tar? Solaris tar and GNU tar have
different ideas about how long pathnames should be encoded. If you have
GNU tar handy or can build it easily, would you give that a try?
