It's quite possible that some /tmp-cleaning program has run and removed that
socket, used for X11 programs to communicate with the server. I've had
similar issues with other after some SELinux stuff cleans /tmp.
This of course assumes the X server hasn't been restarted since Friday, since
that should recreate the directory and socket.
The other possibility is that the directory .X11-unix and/or the file X0 exist,
but are owned by some other user and have bad permissions. Not sure how this
can arise though.. ;)
In any case, no *other* X programs should work either - when shooting issues
like these, I always try 'xlogo' or 'xclock', simply because they're so
brain-dead that they make good basic connectivity tests...
Having said that, we really *should* handle this case better.
