Actually, I've been thinking about this myself recently, but from a
slightly broader perspective.  What I've been wondering is, if I were to
to chuck everything and start over, which extension language would I
choose today, and why?

The answer to that question would lead to something that is not XEmacs,
though, but a competitor of both Emacs and XEmacs.
