 afaict, VM converted to  base64 the uuencoded file... 
 using VM, i can read the backtrace:

 1) i saved the attachment to file "backtrace.uue"
 2) i uudecode'd the file
 3) C-x f backtrace RET

 next try: i'm going to attach the file i seved the backtrace into,
 skipping the (unnecessary) uuencoding step
