I think we've tracked down the problem. His Mac software is a couple tears out 
of date while the software I downloaded from HP for this scanner is the latest 
version - including all the relevant libraries.

He's going to be upgrading the Mac this evening. I think that will fix the 
problem because the files I have produced are readable on more up-to-date Macs 
and on Windows.

Let's hear it for proprietary formats.
