It depends on what you are using for input, really.....

 I think there is only 1 HD external tuner (1212?) and it needs USB 2.0.
Works like a champ, as well as the IR for changing channels.

I have played w/ most of the USB tuners and they all work iirc.

The downside to the external USB tuner is they need input from something
(Cable box) and have to change the channel on the box (infrared). So, more
cabling and costs (rental) and that box can only display the channel being
recorded (unlike DVR where it can record 1 channel and show another; 2
tuners).

There are tuners available that can use cable cards. I have NOT played with
them, yet. Ideally that will solve the problem of a cable box for each
tuner. You would need multiple tunersand cable boxes if you want to record
multiple shows at the same time or record a show while watching another.

If you've built a MythTV box lately, what worked for you? I'm planning a
