1950 and HD-PVR can work w/ output from cable box. I used a 950 for over 
the air only.

That said, the picture will be on channel 3 only for the 950. You will 
have to change the tuner(box) to change the channel. There are some 
patches for the 1950/PVR(1212) that are available to get the IR 
transmitter working. I don't know the status w/ Ubuntu. The developer 
made the patches for Fedora and I think it might be in the (pending) F12 
kernel.

I would try to get the 950 working over the air first and then connect 
to the cable box. It could work.
