Most ISPs, I thought, wanted you to relay your email through them.
That is not the problem now. Earlier Verizon would accept email
based on originating within their IP ranges. Now they are moving
from open access on port 25 to login/passwd authentication on
port 587. I've got to install and reconfigure a third party
sendmail to do authentication as Sun's sendmail isn't capable
of it.
I've been had a multiple smarthost setup for a while. For those
sites that won't accept email direct from a dynamic IP addr, I
relay it through my ISP, earlier Comcast, now Verizon.
