[Novalug] Linux Wireless - tips tools and hacks?

I have a laptop with an Intel wireless that's working fine. I connect to
my home network no problem. I also have a USB one with an external
antenna that sees my home network no problem. I never worried about
this much since I only ever connect to home. Only now I have to check
around for others. But where are the rest? I should see the few around
me at various other houses. And yet, I don't see them.
The point of this is I am trying to run aircrack and airsnort. I'm not
entirely sure how to do this so any pointers to web sites that dont
have info from 2007 and wifi configs using mad-wifi, I'd very much be
appreciative. I keep finding info that doesn't really help and is very
out of date.
The end of this is doing some cracking at work. I know my office is in
fact hackable and I have been arguing for better security. But I keep
getting pushback of "just because you say it can be done, doesn't mean
it can be done." So I have to do it now :-)
Running Fedora 11 and XFCE but I think anything current I can deal with.
