I tried all three levels of -v. Did not see anything obvious.
The -vvv output is quite long, here is the end piece where all
"X" entries are found.

One thing I just noticed is the entry on the 4th line
above calling /usr/bin/xauth. On Solaris 9 xauth is
located in /usr/openwin/bin. But I put a symlink in
/usr/bin and there was no change in behavior.
