People will differ.  I merely state my opinions.  To each their own.

BTW, I believe some of my 250GB drives are not the exact same models.
Some are Travelstar 5K250 and some are Travelstar 5K320 models, but
all are 250GB.  So I'm not completely anal on this.

But I keep my volume groups 1:1 with my RAID.  That's more of my focus.

If people want to mix 2.5" and 3.5" drives of the same capacities, so be it.
In fact, given the density v. sweep, they may be similar in performance.

That would be an interesting experiment to find out.  ;)

I don't see a direct harm in mixing drive models, aside from slight 
variations in performance and capacity (the latter can be dealt with by 
using the smallest common size). Arguably there's an advantage here as 
well, since buying multiple disks from the same manufacturing batch has 
sometimes led to rapidly successive failures as they wear out in unison.
