For everyone else:
That method is very much *not* recommended.  You end up missing out on
the hints regarding how to handle interesting package combinations (like
the time having evm installed on Feisty when upgrading to Gutsy resulted
in Gutsy having evm and the kernel fighting...it only occurred if you
had upgraded from Dapper before *and* didn't use the supported upgrade
methods).

For graphical updates:
gksu -c "update-manager -c" after release and 
gksu -c "update-manager -d" before release

For command line:
sudo do-release-upgrade 
after release
sudo do-release-upgrade -d 
before release (-d for "devel")
