Well I tried one more thing:  Brasero.  I installed it through Synaptic but
it didn't work -- would hang until I disconnected the drive, then it
wouldn't recognize the media.  Uninstalled.

On a whim, went to CNR to install Brasero.  Instant success!

What gives?
