My 19" Acer 1280x1024 was dead yesterday morning when I
got to my desk. The last Acer did that to me.
I went to the shop for a replacement. The lady told me
older computers often won't support wide screens -- anything over
1280. (I normally run at least three behind a KVM switch.)
First off, how do I check mine for that? One of them is
more than two (but less than five) years old.
Also, the "square" ones -- if you can find one, at least
here -- now actually cost *more* than those damn silly-looking
granny-glasses double-wide monstrosities.
But the monstrosities seem to be what the mass market
wants, or what the local retailers think it does. Neither walmart
nor officemax had anything else. What some makers call a 19"
(diagonal) screen looks to be twice as wide as it is tall.
Apparently people don't know enough basic math to realize they're
getting *less* screen area.
So I went back and bought the one I could. It's an ADI
A905 -- and it neither has nor can take a power cord!
It has one of those damn little transformer gadgets like
a printer -- which is going to draw power even when it's off.
In other words, it'll kill my UPS. It'll drain the
battery even with everything shut down.
How slimy can a POS be?
And is it true that ViewSonic doesn't make a 1280x1024
any more? There are certainly lots of them still for sale; but at
viewsonic.com I did get 'We found "0" documents matching your
query "1280x1024 lcd"'
