The rest of this story ...

I didn't find anyplace local with a new keyboard, so I removed
the failing keyboard (4 screws), disassembled it (2 screws) and wiped
out the accumulated fur, hair, dirt, dust and fossils. I reassembled
and reinstalled it, and now it's working again.

I'm not sure if there's a moral to the story.

I've owned a half-dozen laptops, and the Dell C840 is still my
favorite. I'ts not wide-screen, (but 1600x1200 is nice). At 1.2Ghz
it's not blazingly fast, and the 1 G ram limit is a problem when I need
to run a bunch of vmware sessions.

But unlike other laptops I've had, it doesn't die when I give it a
lot of use (and abuse).

I guess the moral is that even the unkillable laptops need some
maintenance once in a while.
