Heh...I wrote something like that under Unix, on Xerox workstations,
when I worked for the IMF around 1985.  The architects there, using
it for a CAD system I developed, loved it.  ESPECIALLY the backwards
"U", used for "oops", or "undo".  The system was heavy on mouse
usage, rather than keyboard, and the mouse motions were faster and
more accurate than trying to locate the correct icon, since the
mouse motion worked anywhere on the screen, leaving no need to hunt
for a target.
