Perhaps someone could explain what's going on and suggest how I can go
about straightening out this problem. I have no idea where to start
looking for the problem.

One item that probably matters: My domain is hosted at Speakeasy and I
don't maintain my own mailserver.

Problem #1 - This one has been fixed in the sense that it has gone away,
but I'd still like to have some idea of what the problem was. I was
dealing with a company in Maryland. For two years, e-mail worked
perfectly. Abruptly, their e-mail to me just disappeared - no bounce, no
error messages. It was just gone. They were able to send to my gmail
account so we had a workaround. Six weeks later, the problem went away
and it has worked perfectly since.

Problem #2 - This is a current problem. A company in New York is unable
to send anything to me. This time, they get an error message that the
process timed out without being able to send. I can send to them and
they are able to send to other addresses not on my domain.
