The note application I use is Tomboy. It's written to work with *nix systems
and Mono but since it's C# + GTK# was ported to Windows easily enough. Should
work in Linux, Solaris, and using OSX's X Window System thing. Supports
notebooks, so you can categorize a bundle of notes as "license keys" or what
have you.
