Did you *TRY* this:

   (set-input-method 'latin-1-prefix)

?

It's one line. It will produce an equivalent effect. It seems to have  
been in Emacs for quite some time; the file that contains that command  
has copyrights going back to 1997.

It if doesn't work, what error results?
