Sun has some really attractive products right now.
Could you please write up your thoughts on how they get this right? I am
interested in your opinion on the changes happening right now and how Sun
is able to address them better than the competition.
Honestly, Sparc processors weren't where the market was moving.
Well, SUN/SPARC architect Marc Tremblay had very good ideas on
transactional memory protocols and cache prefetching (scout threads)
that will likely be important in distributed/parallel hardware, which
is the only available way to keep improving system performance.
Tellingly, Microsoft snatched him from Sun, and the paper which
was supposed to describe the work wasn't submitted, but it was
ahead of the state of the art, not misguided at all, in my opinion.
BTW, will MS come out with their own CPU now :)?
