[Ma-linux] Screen Resolution on Remote Client, Randr

Hi, all.
I'm accessing a virtual Ubuntu Linux 9.04 machine on a remote host via
a Windows VNC client. (The remote Linux system is one of several
virtual machines running on a single physical machine managed by
VMWare.)
The physical screen on the Windows box supports 1280 x 1024, but I
can't get that high in the Linux VM. When I try to access the screen
resolution dialog via the System / Preferences / Display menu item, I
get the error "RANDR extension is not present". The xrandr error
message is a bit more specific, "Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on
display ":1.0".
In case it helps, I checked the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, and saw lots
of messages like:
(II) VMWARE (0): Not using default mode "1280x1024" (width requires
unsupported line pitch)
, and other messages specifying "(hsync out of range)" or "(bad mode
clock/interlace/doublescan)".
Is there something I can put into my ~/.vnc/xstartup file to load
randr, or to otherwise specify the screen resolution? If not, what
else might I do?
Thanks for any help,
Keith
