[Ma-linux] Vino Server Broken?

Hello, all. I'm trying to run a VNC server on a laptop running the
new Ubuntu 8.1. It looks like the built in VNC server is vino-
server. You can run vino-preferences from the command line, or from
the System, Preferences, Remote Desktop menu item.

My problem is that when I try to access the Ubuntu laptop from a VNC
client, I get a connection refused error.

vino-server is configured to run, and, according to ps, is running.
However, an nmap localhost shows that the VNC port (5900) is not open.

I don't think there is a firewall on this system, but I could be wrong.

Synaptic did not report any updates to vino-server available, so I
guess I'm running the most current version.

I searched online, and found many reports of this error, with a few
mysterious fixes (none of which worked for me), and many unanswered
questions.

I also tried the plainer vncserver and vnc4server, but they seem to
start a different X session using twm, which does not help me.

Can anyone guide me as to how to get a vnc server to work on Ubuntu 8.1?

Thanks,
Keith
