[Ma-linux] make rpm not scan all mounted filesystems

This is send on behalf of a friend, but it effects me as well, so I'm hoping someone has an answer:

It seems like the 'rpm' command wants to scan or in some way touch
all mounted filesystems on a machine when it starts up.

If you've got an automounted filesystem that isn't responding, the
  command of course hangs.

Is there any way to tell rpm "no, really, just install the package
and don't worry about what's mounted"? Googling anything with 'rpm'
in the query produces way too much cruft...
